How this calculator works

Pace conversion is exact unit math — no formula, no estimation. Conversions: 1 mile = 1.609344 km. min/mi to min/km divides by 1.609344; speed (mph) to pace (min/mi) is 60 ÷ mph.

FAQ

Frequently asked

How do I convert min/km to min/mile?
Multiply your min/km pace by 1.60934. For example, 5:00/km × 1.609 = 8:03/mi. Our converter does this automatically and also shows km/h, mph, and split times.
What pace should I run for a sub-4-hour marathon?
A sub-4-hour marathon requires an average pace of about 5:41/km or 9:09/mi (roughly 9.4 km/h or 5.8 mph). Use the reference table to find your target pace row.
How do I use the pace reference table?
The table shows equivalent paces across all common formats (min/km, min/mi, km/h, mph) along with projected finish times for standard race distances. Find your pace row to see all conversions at a glance.
What's the difference between pace and speed?
Pace is time per distance (e.g., 5:00/km), while speed is distance per time (e.g., 12 km/h). They're inversely related: faster speed = lower pace number. Runners typically use pace; cyclists and treadmills often use speed.
How do I calculate 400m and 800m split times?
Your 400m split is 40% of your per-km pace, and your 800m split is 80%. For a 5:00/km pace: 400m = 2:00, 800m = 4:00. These are useful for track workouts.
